“We Serve”
As part of the world’s largest service organisation, Lions Clubs International (LCI), the Lions club of Fairlop is based in Essex in the borough of Redbridge. The main activities of the club is to raise funds on a continual basis to donate to charities and other deserving good causes in addition to providing any service to the community that may be needed. Supporting projects abroad and in the UK, our motto is ‘we serve ’and our remit to help those less fortunate than ourselves.
Voted as the best non-governmental organisation by the Financial Times in 2007, LCI currently has a membership of 1.3 million members in around 45000 clubs in over 200 countries around the world and is playing a crucial and integral role in humanitarian aid. Responding to major disasters around the world with funding and physical help, it is at the forefront of charitable aid. It is active in all aspects of relief across a wide range of areas which include teaching life skills to children; hearing projects; the preserve of our water, land and air; and bringing the world together through exchange programs and health missions often in conjunction with the United Nations.
The Lions movement however is best known for working to end preventable blindness. There are not many organisation that does more in this field and two recent projects demonstrates the commitment of LCI – raising over $300 million dollars! The current estimates are that we have saved about 30 million people from blindness but there is still much to do. Blindness is not the only problem in the world. There is severe poverty and disability; homeless children; hearing disorders; diseases;- the list goes on and it is comforting to know that LCI is addressing all these problems around the world.
The Lions Club of Fairlop has been serving the local community for many years. While our main focus is always on helping the poor and needy, we also endeavor to work with our local community to encourage participation and promote Lionism. Since it’s inception in November 2004 the club has raised and donated over £300,000 to local, National and International causes.
